Proverbs 20:20Compare with Prov 30:17. Under the old testament law, those who cursed their parents were to be stoned to death (Lev 20:9, Ex 21:17, and Deut 21:20-21).
Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Proverbs 28:24In Jesus time, the scribes and Pharisees condoned this very behavior. Jesus sternly rebuked them in Matthew 15:4-6 for making the commandment to honor your parents in Exodus 20:12 of no effect.

Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.
Proverbs 29:3What a shame the prodigal son didn't heed this parable (Luke 15:13, 30). As Proverbs 5:8-10 and 6:26 proclaim, keeping company with harlots will separate you from your money fast!
Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.

My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
According to Exodus 20:12, God promises long life to those who honor their parents.
My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.
A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.
Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.
Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
